Starting in the 1880s, the Rhydlyn estate served as home to late real estate attorney James G. Francis and his wife Sarah. Nearby Francis Avenue was named for his family. After their father died in 1890, Sarah’s sister and famed local photographer Lucy Sampson also lived in the house with them. Lucy took up the profession of photography in 1898, and she had a darkroom in the Francis house. She was well known and respected in Berwyn (and beyond) as she moved around the village with her camera. She produced an extensive collection of images featuring picturesque scenes, historic buildings, interiors of stately main line homes, as well as group and individual portraits. Her prints have been included in many books and magazines. Many of her photographs were printed as postcards and serve as a valuable record of local history.
